Cultural Tours

cultural toursOne of the most important aspects of any journey is the experiences that take place along the way. When we reflect upon the past, we usually remember substantial events and experiences that reshaped our understanding and outlook upon life. While some people choose to travel for the sake of "relaxation," other people enjoy the adventures of traveling to a foreign country and are looking to experiencing a new way of life. They seek knowledge and a new understanding about themselves and the world they live in and want to make the most out of their time, money, and energy.

India is perhaps one of the most culturally diverse countries in the world. Throughout its history it has been home to many different ways of life; from Buddhism to Hinduism, nomadic communities to metropolitan cities, India has undergone many transformations over its long history. Over 4,000 years ago lived the Indus Valley Civilization, one of the first civilizations of humanity which occupied the north western region of India. Later in history India was a melting pot for religious ideologies; Buddhism, Jainism, Hinduism, and Sikhism took root within the culturally diverse country.

While present day India posses many modern trends comparable to those of "western" societies, there are still many communities that live a life similar to their ancestors thousands of years ago. They use bullock carts to plow their fields and depend upon traditional practices and beliefs to sustain their families and communities. There are also many historical sites throughout India, and many temples still stand erect that were constructed hundreds of years ago. In southern India, for example, there are many temples that represent the historical diversity of India culture. Even in the one state of Tamil Nadu it is not difficult to find temples from many different religious beliefs including Hinduism, Tantricism, Jainism, Buddhism, Islamism, Sikhism, and even Catholicism.

cultural toursThe Tureya Foundation's Cultural Experience program is designed to give guests and residence the chance to learn and experience the diversity of the Indian culture. We will visit many sites throughout Tamil Nadu that represent the wonders and beauty of southern India. There will also be the opportunity to work as a volunteer for lower class communities and spend time with families and children who want to learn more about your way of life.

In the Cultural Experience program we will visit temples and historical sites within Madurai, Kodaikanal, and Rameswaram, and other smaller cities around Tamil Nadu. Students will learn about the significance of various locations and also spend time visiting local communities. The specifics of our programs will vary depending upon the time of year and the interests of the students. Some examples of our activities include participating in festivals, community events, public functions, mountain trekking, and waterfall hikes/bathing.

As mentioned, volunteer opportunities are an optional activity in the Cultural Experience program and include helping children learn and read, working with women to develop social rights, and distributing food supplies and materials to lower class communities. With the kind support of the communities, we may also be offering the opportunity to live and work in indigenous communities throughout Kodaikanal.
