Gurukul School
What is education? Is it not the most fundamental aspect of a child's growth and development, second only to a good familial support system? At the Tureya Foundation, we explore the true potential of children while also exploring an environment free of gender discrimination and class division. The heart of the gurukul system is to challenge every child to their fullest potential, bringing out the creativity and uniqueness of each and every student. Today's education system has failed the children, especially here in India where money and test scores have outweighed the values of creating a student that is disciplined, creative, inquisitive, courageous, and thirsty for knowledge.
One of the major components that is missing is nearly all educational models is the a connection with nature. While math, sciences, and sociology are all important subjects, a connection with nature can inspire each and every discipline of study, and make it more meaningful and real. Aside from the tremendous value of hand on experience, and education that is integrated with nature can give children the sense of freedom that extends far beyond any classroom walls. What academic administrators and advocates often neglect is the significant of a child's relationship with nature; a continuous relationship with nature is responsible for instilling environmental ethics, natural competency, and respect for the earth’s resources. It also brings out the best in a child, and can stimulate the innate connection that each human being has with nature, one that us symbiotic and sensitive to global needs.
Education should be also free of economic and social boundaries and should not discriminate between class, creed, and gender. We believe in opening the doors to a greater variety of philosophical ideas which allow students to gain a better understanding of all the different world views. All children deserve equal opportunity to receive an education, but at Tureya ashram we take these principles a step further and encourage every child to fully explore their unique talents and abilities. By allowing them to cultivate their individuality at a young age, children are provided the right tools to excel throughout their lives.
Through principles of the Gurukul system, children are trained in all aspects of life, from the traditional philosophies of ancient India to the advanced sciences of Modern Physics. Alongside their academic curriculum, children are taught the practical techniques of Yoga Science which help them maintain mental, spiritual, and physical health. By introducing the Yogic practices at a young age, children are given the power of thought culture, focusing their minds and developing the skills of concentration.
Tureya Ashram is working in cooperation with the Cohen Foundation of India to transform the educational standard and reform education policy to give equal opportunity to all children. A child may come from the horrendous conditions of the slums or the towers of upper class metropolitan apartments, but we will show equal love and attention to both so they may excel in any community or situation. By having children of different social and economic classes come together in the same environment, students will find greater understanding and compassion for their country’s diverse collection of cultural communities.
