Ashram LifeFor millennia together ashrams have provided physical, mental, and spiritual shelter for individuals who have embarked on the path of self-realization. Throughout the history of Indian culture ashrams have acted as pillars for the spiritual traditions of the ancient society, continuously maintaining the teachings for generations to come.

While the ashram tradition still remains in India, many qualities have changed which have limited the potential of the wonderful social heritage of yoga and other esoteric practices from India’s vast history. In order to restore the traditions and practices of yoga and Indian culture, the Tureya community is opening the doors to aspirants of all genders, social classes, and nationalities. Above all human qualities rest the one universal element that is divinely woven into the fabric of every form of creation. This quality is our true nature, the most essential form of creation that unites everything in the universe. Through it, we cannot find any differences between race, gender, class, or nationality. With this understanding always in mind, Tureya ashram is now open to all aspirants who have embarked on the path of spirituality. The success of the individual and community rests within this universal understanding and acceptance of every manifestation of life. Skin, gender, and class are only skin deep. What is important is the spirit within every human being.

Like traditional ashrams, the Tureya ashram exists as both a refuge for spiritual aspirants as well as a storehouse for spiritual wisdom. While we are a community that emphasis age old beliefs and practices, we also maintain a clean, healthy, and safe environment for all guests, students, and devotees including those from western societies. By spending time at the ashram, spiritual aspirants can begin to cultivate their spiritual practices and sincerely open new passage ways in the path of spirituality.

Ashram in Kodaikanal:

Kodaikanal MountainsAt the heart of Southern India rests the Western Ghats, the only major mountain range in India outside of the Himalayas. The Western Ghats have been the home and sanctum for thousand of spiritual saints and Rishi throughout the history of Southern Indian spirituality. These spiritual devotees found refuge in the dense mountain forests for spiritual practice and divine contemplation, utilizing the cool, temperate climate as a relief from the heat of the Indian plains. The mountain forests dense with hundreds of thousands of plant species also provided the opportunity for natural medical sciences like Siddha and Ayerveda to advance unabated.

Many indigenous populations also inhabited these southern mountain, some so ancient that their archeological remains have been preserved as a World Heritage Site.  Most of the ancient and sacred sites scattered throughout the Ghats are only accessible by foot.

Today, the only major location at a higher elevation in the Ghats that can be accessed by a road is the city of Kodaikanal. Kodaikanal, often called the Queen of the Hills for its pristine wilderness and panoramic views, is the home of the Tureya Ashram.

The Ashram is located just outside of the city where the population is scarce and the wilderness in plenty. Surround by forests and a small farming community, the ashram ecosystem provides the serene solicitude of the secluded mountain forests while still being easily accessible from the city center.
